[pdftex] pdfpages, installation and problems

Hi

Aiming eventually to install the shell script pdfnup, I'm currently trying to 
install the latex package "pdfpages" under Redhat 8 (tetex).

I have made the directory texmf/tex/latex and extracted the pdfpages.tar.gz, 
creating texmf/tex/latex/pdfpages. I can do a
  #latex pdfpages.ins
without problems, but latex exits with an error upon
  #latex pdfpages.dtx
(output reproduced below). Now, while strange, this should only affect the 
documentation part. It seems to find pdfpages.sty alright
  kaha at carter slides $ kpsewhich pdfpages.sty
  /home/bs/bs/texmf/tex/latex/pdfpages/pdfpages.sty
(I have a local texmf tree). However, creating a very simple test fil, 
containing
  \documentclass[a4paper]{article}
  \usepackage{pdfpages}
  \begin{document}
  test
  \end{document}
gives an error regarding my pdftex version when I run it though pdflatex 
(error reproduced below). However, I seem to have the "right" version

  kpathsea version 3.3.3.1
(additional text concerning copyright has been removed).

I'm not really good at Tex, but still - usually I'm able to install packages 
myself. Any ideas?
