[pdftex] Italics and Bold

Hi,
    Have a look at the following code

{\it {\bf Ar}ea Es{\bf t}imation}

I want Art to be in Bold and the rest to be italicised. But I do not get 
bold font.  What's wrong with the above. Can't I have bold along with slant 
of italics???

Similarly, when using \mathcal, I do not get bold fonts by using \mathbb. 
Any work around.
