I can affirmatively state that gs (even latest version from 3 months ago) is not capable of safely optimizing pdflatex output. you are fortunate that you got an error. in my case, my readers just stopped reading. eventually, someone told me, and I confirmed that the acrobat reader on windows could no longer read the resulting output. /iaw
