[pdftex] bordermatrix in an array

[strix]

the problem I'm having is that a border matrix I'm creating and want to
place in an array
so that I can place an image next to it is coming out constrained.
here is the exact code, where \matone is the bordermatrix :

\end{array}
\)
\end{center}

\label{fig_1}
\end{figure}

I've tried it without the figure and center so it seems as though it's the
array thats causing the problem.
The problem also seems to occur with a pmatrix.

I'm using pdflatex:

kpathsea version 3.3.7
