[pdftex] support for PNG alpha channel

Hi,

I'm using "pdflatex" to generate PDF slideshows.  My version is
  This is pdfTeX, Version 3.14159-1.00a-pretest-20011114-ojmw (Web2C 7.3.7)

Skimming the archives for this list I see a few postings which say that
support for PNG alpha channel, even just basic transparency, are not yet
implemented.  My experience with the version of "pdflatex" I have seems
to suggest that this is still the case.  Is this so, and are there any
plans for including this functionality in the near future?  Also, are
there any other (bitmap) file formats for which pdftex supports basic
(binary) transparency?  I tried using an image in PDF format, and the
transparency worked great, but I encountered colour distortion problems,
which I'll ask about in separate post.
