[pdftex] slightly OT: ps2pdf vs. distiller

The fonts are different somehow.

If you'll use a tool like Enfocus PitStop to copy a paragraph from one
sample document into another you can see that the change follows along
with the font. Switching say, the Acrobat Distiller font text to the
GhostScript embedded font makes it sharp / crisp, and doing the reverse
has the same effect.

I suspect that there's a hinting instruction / subroutine for stem width
which is getting lost / misplaced by GhostScript, one which Acrobat 4
doesn't use, but 5 does.
