[pdftex] Config file for pdflatex's metafont

Hi,
Two questions:
(1) Are there binaries for linux for pdftex 1.0X? If so,  where?  There are no 
version designations at http://www.tug.org/applications/pdftex/.  What format 
are these files in?  Just the elf binaries?

(2)
I have altered my config.ps files so that dvips uses the specifications of my
printer (ljfzzz: 1200dpi) when it calls metafont to generate a bitmapped symbol 
font (using textcomp.sty).  However, when I run the same tex file through 
pdflatex, a
different config file is used (one with dpi=600 and the wrong printer [ljfour]). 
  What is the name and location of the metafont config file used by pdflatex? 
Or if some other method:  how do I enable 1200dpi bitmaps?  (On screen, the ps 
version viewed through xdvi or gv, seem much better than the acrobat version. 
Although it is harder to distinguish in printed form.)

This is pdfTeX, Version 3.14159-14h-released-20010417 (Web2C 7.3.3.1)
I use RedHat 7.2.
