[pdftex] Current version of pdflatex

Hi folks,

I've spent some time on finding a precompiled version of pdflatex that can be
installed "out of the box" on a x86-linux machine. However, I can't find such
a version on the net. Neither the current rpms for SuSE linux (www.suse.de),
nor the most recent teTeX distribution (www.tug.org/tetex) contain an up to
date version of pdflatex (they still contain the 0.13d, which is very old). Is
there such a ready-to-run version for linux on the net?

I also tried to compile a version of pdftex on my own, but I can't figure out
how to set up paths correctly in order to forbid pdftex to use stuff from my
standard TeX installation (which also contains an old version of pdftex). I
used the source from www.pdftex.org. Is there a way to tell configure or the
compiled pdftex to run in its own local environment and not to use the global
TeX stuff?

Yours,

Tobias Haustein
