[pdftex] redirecting tex dvi output

Chris,

  Thanks for the quick help.  Pdf(la)tex seems a
better choice (than dvipdfm) for my process, since it
saves the step of translating the .dvi file to pdf.

  Unfortunately, pdf(la)tex has the same file output
convention as tex and latex--when the input comes from
stdin (not from some .tex file), the output is always
stored in "texput.pdf".  I need a way to redirect the
output to a filename I specify.

  Looking at my earlier post, I should have stated the
problem more clearly :)  Any ideas?
