I tried your example with
This is pdfTeX, Version 3.14159-1.00a-pretest-20010806 (Web2C 7.3.3)
and
This is pdfTeX, Version 3.14159-1.00b-pretest-20020204 (Web2C 7.3.7).
Both cases were OK.
The problem will be in libpng.
Please upgrade the libpng to 1.2.1.
