[pdftex] request for help with pictures and pdflatex

Thanks for the pointer. However, another problem is encountered.  I
installed the newer version of pdftex (compiled the code and replaced
the files pdftex, pdftex.pool, and ttf2afm); but got the following error
when running pdflatex:

This is pdfTeX, Version 3.14159-14h-released-20010417 (Web2C 7.3.3.1)
(Fatal format file error; I'm stymied)

with the input:

\documentclass{seminar}
\usepackage{epsfig}
% fix the seminar class
\usepackage{fixseminar}

\begin{document}

\begin{slide}
  \includegraphics[height=0.7\textheight]{MercuryArcSpectrum}
\end{slide}

\end{document}

I must have overlooked something simple.  Please advise.
