[pdftex] thumbpdf & libpng error

[E GCP]

Ok, I got the the file pdftex-linux-20010417.zip and unzipped it. I then 
moved all these new programs to where the old version of the same programs 
were. I must have missed some step because when I try to use
thumbpdf this is what I get:

*** make png files / run Ghostscript ***

Checking in the tmp for error log this is what I found:

This is pdfTeX, Version 3.14159-14h-released-20010417 (Web2C 7.3.3.1)
(Fatal format file error; I'm stymied)

Please help, like I said, I'm a newbie.
