Solutions:

(1) Do not use T1 encoding, then you will fall back to CM fonts.

(2) Switch to "European Modern" ( http://www.yandy.com/em.htm )

(3) Use a package like AE that fakes some characters in T1 encoding ---
but then you can't "search" or "cut and paste" in PDF result if
you use accented characters.

(4) Use Type 1 versions of the EC fonts.
