[pdftex] how to add an entry Index to toc, consistent with hyperref

Hi,

I tried to add an entry refering to the index to
the table of contents e.g. by
    \addcontentsline{toc}{index}{\numberline{} Index}
but hyperref does not recognise 'index' or the like.
I could'nt find hints in the hyperref manual
Hypertext marks in LaTeX: the hyperref package.
