[pdftex] Harlequin RIP 5.3 and PDFTeX

I've kicked this over a bit, and've been wondering---could the
difficulty be with the way TeX (and by extension pdfTeX) on-the-fly
re-encodes a font?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the test for this would be to create a pdf
using a ``raw'' font, no?
