Not really, when one considers that it's there solely to serve as a
lousy (lossy) preview.

Concept dates back to .eps files when only a few systems (e.g. NeXTstep
with Display PostScript) could parse them, so one had to have a bitmap
for the layout program to display. (and 17 years later we're still
getting low-resolution previews printing for .eps graphics in some
instances!)
