[pdftex] Illustrator 9.0 files with pdflatex and graphicx?

I am trying to include Illustrator files directly. I.e., I save to .pdf
from Illustrator (this is version 9 on the PC). Illustrator dutifully
puts the 8.5x11 MediaBox into the file with predictable results when I
use includegraphics. The actualy graphics in my Illustrator file only
cover a small region. The bounding box info in the Illustrator file is
correct. How can I coerce \includegraphics to actually use the bbox info
and not the MediaBox info?

Or is there some other blessed way of including Illustrator pdf files
directly?
