[pdftex] pdftex configuration problem (probably simple)

Somehow I have been able to get my configuration in an erroneous state. 
When I run pdflatex on a file containing bbold font I get (fragment):

This is METAFONT, Version 2.7182 (Web2C 7.3.1)

Now, my printer is a nexthi and latex->dvips works fine. 400dpi bitmaps 
are generated. I have a texmf.local/web2c/mktex.cnf saying bitmaps must 
be generated @ 400dpi and I have a texmf.local/dvips/config/config.ps 
saying that the mode is nexthi and the resolution is 400.

But when I run pdftex, it seems not to get the right setting. 
Frustrating, because at some point the last days it did work. But now, I 
am unable to find out what causes the problem.

Can anybody help me?
