[pdftex] White Borders for Screen and Paper Output

Is there a way to specify white borders in pdf(La)TeX separately for
screen and paper output? E. g. the LaTeX a4paper option gives rather
high but narrow text. If Acrobat could be directed to cut the white
borders to minimum when the document is viewed, the screen would be used
more efficiently. For printing the text should be positioned obeying
printing borders. One might think, Acrobat's ``Fit Visible'' should do
the right thing, but this appears to be not robust.
