[pdftex] t1-encoding

Hello,
I tried pdflatex with the following usepackage commands.

\usepackage[latin1]{inputenc}
\usepackage{german}
\usepackage{t1enc}
\selectlanguage{german}

The result is a very strange looking font in the
pdf-output-file.

Deleting the t1enc usepackage-command solves the problem.
But I need the t1enc-package.

Does anybody know what to do?
