it's not really pdftex specific (it applies equally well to distilled
output).
i have an answer for the uk tex faq (http://www.tex.ac.uk/faq) on the
stocks, that will mention ae and the competing zefonts. it will also
(don't worry, berthold) mention the problems that they present to
acrobat reader users.
