[pdftex] Problem with hyperref and \numberwithin in pdflatex

When I use the hyperref package and \numberwithin from amsmath, the
generated hyperlinks to figures and equations in sections following the
\numberwithin command are incorrect (they go to previous figures and
equations). pdflatex generates warnings that the references are
incorrect. Any idea on how to work around this?

I used

\appendix
\numberwithin{equation}{section}
\numberwithin{figure}{section}
