[pdftex] version confusion

Ok, I'm confused or malfunctioning...
I go to
ftp://ftp.cstug.cz/pub/tex/local/cstug/thanh/pdftex/
in subdir 0.14f and I see
pdftex-20000525-linux.zip
I go to subdir snapshots/20010126 and I see
pdftex-linux-20010126.zip
I expected that files with names containing dates in them will correlate in some
non-monotonic way with version number, but unless I did something really wrong
when I expand pdftex-linux-20010126.zip it tells me
[root at bnr233 web2c]# ./pdftex
This is pdfTeX, Version 3.14159-13h-pretest-20010126 (Web2C 7.3.3.1)
when I expand
pdftex-linux-20000525.zip
it tells me:
[root at bnr233 pdftex20000525]# ./pdftex
This is pdfTeX, Version 3.14159-14f-released-20000525 (Web2C 7.3.2x)
What (or where) is the latest version? and why do we have what strikes me as a weird
naming
convention? What is the significance of the different version numbers in Web2C? Do I need
to update that as well?
(Both versions of pdftex seem to work...)
Jim
