Exactly my fear also.  Glad to know that the implementation implications
aren't as deep as I feared.

    interesting to hear from LaTeX people what the possible LaTeX 
    applications of signs could be.

There are relatively few people on this particular list, I don't see any
of the core LaTeX people.  I hope you can get a lively discussion going
at EuroTeX, though.  It might also be worth sending them your paper
directly.
