[metapost] independent variable overflow

Taco or anyone, is the "independent variables" setting controllable from
texmf.cnf or otherwise?  Nobre maxed out main_memory, but wrote me the
following:

I changed main_memory but the "independent variables" overflowed at
the same number: 33554431.

One thing is for sure: the greater the number of macros, the greater
the risk of overflow. Ten years ago, I had very few macros, and the
same graphic i'm trying to run now, ran ok.
