There are a few other programs you might be interested in as well.

Pyx http://pyx.sourceforge.net is a graphics package which is written
in Python and uses Python as a user interface.  Typesetting is done by
TeX, of course.  The advantage is that you can include any Python
package.  If you need support for complex numbers, just include the
appropriate Python package.

pgf ftp://tug.ctan.org/pub/tex-archive/graphics/pgf is a TeX macro
package which accepts plain TeX, LaTeX, or Context input and can be
used with pdfTeX, VTEX, dvips or tex4ht.  In the latter case, the
output format is SVG.  The advantage is that it is not a separate
program, so that it provides two-way communication with TeX.  However,
there are still some limitations because all the arithmetic has to be
done by TeX, which is painful and inefficient.  But you can expect
significant improvements when LuaTeX will be available.

I hope that none of the programs will be killed by another one.
