[metapost] format.mp and mptopdf

Thanks for the link, but I only found one document there dealing with
mptopdf: metafun-s.pdf. On page 546 ff. one can read:

| Given that the previously mentioned format is generated, you can say:

| mptopdf somefile
| mptopdf somefile.123
| mptopdf mp*.*

as I learned earlier, but then

| This script can also process METAPOST files directly:
|
| mptopdf somefile.mp

I think this stuff is still confusing me. Should mptopdf be able to
process mp files or not?
