[metapost] rfc: consistent color values

How are picture assignments treated in Metapost? Are they equivalent to
an addto? That is, if this proposal is implemented would
  truecolors:=0;
  Y := X;
make Y identical to X, or have colors clipped? For that matter, does
  addto Y also X;
recursively examine X (and clip _all_ its colors under this proposal)?
