[math-font-discuss] what is the status of new math font encodings (mathfont-0.59a)?

What is the status of the implementation of the new math font
encodings (the package mathfont-0.59a)?  Is there any plan for
additional development?  Is there any reason why all LaTeX
distributions have not already switched to it?  Is it ready for use or
is it deeply flawed?

The final available version is 0.59a.  Despite being produced almost a
decade ago, it has not shown up in the teTeX distribution (presumably
also it is not in TeXlive, although I have not checked).  What does
this mean?
