I found the source of the problem. A label contained a macro, which is where the “\delta^{*}” in the .aux file came from. Once I changed the label, the problem disappeared.<br class="">

<div class="">It is possible that material was meant to be on the previous line, protected by a comment-character, but a line-break has got into the file-stream, thus unprotecting it.</div>

Hmmm... I have no idea what that is. Please try to put together a minimum file that shows the problem so we can test it. You say that cleaning out ALL auxiliary files and typesetting from scratch still produces that line in your .aux file? Note: this cannot
be TeXShop since it only typesets the document and the aux file is created by the processing of your file, not by TeXShop.<br class="">
