[OS X TeX] benchmark a pdflatexmk run on a Mac Studio?

Warren,

My roughly 700-page book takes about 5 1/2 minutes to do a complete pdflatexmk run on my 2019 iMac 27” with 3.6 GHz 8-core Intel i9, 64 GB RAm, and 2 TB SSD.

On my 13” MacBook Air M1 with 8-core CPU, 16GB RAM, and 1 TB SSD, the same thing takes about 1/2 minute less.

Both are with standard apps running (or sitting) in background, including a real-time antivirus scanner, TextEdit, Skim, Preview.

Although reading in all the packages takes about 15 seconds, most of the processing time as I watch the console window is just the page-by-page processing by TeX.

Hence my hope that an M1 Max would speed up the TeX processing further.

(It currently takes over 5 minutes on my iMac, which is uncomfortably long to wait out before I proceed to further writing and editing; so I’m considering a Mac Studio.)

I was tyosetting a 170 page book using pdflatex which took only about 2 seconds - maybe a longer job might benefit from the newer chips. I somehow doubt it but it would be interesting to see how an M1 Max does on a more involved job.
