I think you'll have to accept that you need to use pip in an anaconda environment, too, because conda is lacking many packages from PyPI, or only has badly outdated versions.

I try to get as far as possible with conda packages, then install the remaining ones with pip.  If you set up a separate anaconda environment for this purpose, you can't mess up the system – and if cson doesn't support Python 3.8, you can set up your new environment to use Python 3.6.
