Yes, newtxtext works, and I suppose that's good enough for me for now. But I don't understand why none of the commands below work for me:

\renewcommand{\rmdefault}{ptm}
\renewcommand{\sfdefault}{phv}
\renewcommand{\ttdefault}{pcr}
