[OS X TeX] TeXShop 3.77 slow opening source files?

Since updating TeXShop to version 3.77 (under macOS Sierra, 10.12.3), opening source files from the “Open Recent” menu or opening a new source file (whether using the shortcut key or the File > Open > New menu item) takes from 2.5 to 3 seconds. This seems like an interminable delay compared to what I recall as a MUCH snappier performance with preceding versions. I _never_ recall seeing the “spinning beach ball” before when opening a source file.
Has anybody else noticed this? What could be the cause?
I have not seen any similar delay with other apps I frequently use, which open files essentially instantaneously.
