On how many machines do you actually sync? A symlink can be copied over by dropbox syncing  the remote copy if you modify that, I just tried.

I don’t think symlinks or hardlinks are things that Dropbox should understand. I one must do this, it’s probably safer to have the actual file in Dropbox and symlink to it from other folders.
