Howdy,
Ugly!
When you do a Get Info... (Cmd-I) on a selected .tex file there is a section of window that says Open With. What is the selected application in that section. That should be application you desire to open the file when double clicked. What does it say?
Good Luck,

Opening a tex source file from within TeXShop works fine. But if I simply click on the source file while in finder, it tries to open a different application. First it was MS Communicator, which I then trashed. Then it was TeXworks, which at least is more relevant, but I don’t use it, so I trashed that. Now it is Excalibur. The computer is going back to Apple tomorrow.

The icon next to the copy turns from a tex source icon to a word document icon—the listing in finder still says it is a tex document, but when I try to open it I get a message saying that I need to be signed in to Communicator to view a contact list, and I get a box to sign in to Communicator. For context, I have used word, but never communicator, in the past.

If that's TeXShop double clicking the file should open it in TeXShop. Another thing that might be helpful would be to run `mdls` on that file in Terminal; in Terminal type `mdls ` (notice the space) and then drag and drop the problematic file onto the Terminal window and hit Return. Let us know what it returns.
