I should have done this before sending the previous email. I hadn’t ever used the “get info” option: on a random tex source file, under “open with”, it listed a long list of applications, but put Excalibur (now) as the default. The other ones included about six different versions of TeXShop, all but one of them labeled with a version number that tells me I no longer even have it. One is listed simply with the TeXShop logo, no version number. Is there a way to (1) check what version that one is, and (2) if so, to make it automatically the default for all such files? This certainly seems to be the root of my problem, I suppose when the logic board was changed (or when I installed TeXShop 6.35) the default was somehow re-set.
BTW in the middle of all this I decided to try to get a clean re-install of TS 6.35. I trashed the old one, then went through downloading and installing it again. It works fine, but I happened to notice that (in finder, when I am in Applications) the information about “last modified" says it was July 18, not today (July 20). I think July 18 may have been when I installed the previous time.

I concluded that this was an OS X or Apple problem (my logic board was replaced in the past week or so, and this problem is probably related to that). Opening a tex source file from within TeXShop works fine. But if I simply click on the source file while in finder, it tries to open a different application. First it was MS Communicator, which I then trashed. Then it was TeXworks, which at least is more relevant, but I don’t use it, so I trashed that. Now it is Excalibur. The computer is going back to Apple tomorrow.
To answer your question, the finder window lists information about the contents of a folder, including the type of
file in each case. There it was recognized as a tex document consistently.
Thanks for the advice.

I just recently (last few days) updated my TeXShop to version 3.65 and the first time I tried to use it I am getting the following very strange behavior—it sounds like an OS X problem, but it only started after the TexShop change, so I am going here first.
I have a TeX source file which I want to copy and modify. I duplicate it via command-D. The icon next to the copy turns from a tex source icon to a word document icon—the listing in finder still says it is a tex document, but when I try to open it I get a message saying that I need to be signed in to Communicator to view a contact list, and I get a box to sign in to Communicator. For context, I have used word, but never communicator, in the past.
I just checked, and it is not the copy that is the problem. If I try to open the original tex file I get the same error message.
Any suggestions?

Howdy,
I'm not sure what you mean by `the listing in finder still says it is a tex document'. If you do a Get Info… (Cmd-I) in Finder for that file what is the Open With setting? If that's TeXShop double clicking the file should open it in TeXShop. Another thing that might be helpful would be to run `mdls` on that file in Terminal; in Terminal type `mdls ` (notice the space) and then drag and drop the problematic file onto the Terminal window and hit Return. Let us know what it returns.
Good Luck,
