Thanks. I followed your advice and somehow ended up with what I want. Now I have a version of TeXShop which identifies itself as 3.6.5.

Nitecki,
I just checked, and the version of TeXShop linked by the “Latest TeXShop Version 3” link
on the “Obtaining” page from the TeXShop site is indeed version 3.65. (I checked by
downloading.)
Isolate those old versions and then download again. It might be a good idea to
“reload” the Obtaining page to make sure you aren’t using a cached page.

I’m confused. I went to the link given in the email below, clicked on “Version 3” and got a file which after unzipping was identified by the TeXShop logo. I moved it into Applications/TeX and double-clicked on it. This opened TeXShop with a blank document—so far, so good. In TeXShop I clicked on “about TeXShop” and got a pane saying TeXShop version 3.6.2 (not 3.6.5) and when I went back into applications I saw that the TeXShop file there indicated a download a week ago, June 12, 2016. Going back to my desktop, I noted that I had two TeXShop logos in my dock, presumably the old and the new. Clicking on one of them opened a version of TeXShop which, when I clicked on “about TeXShop”, said version 3.6.2. The other, when I clicked on “about TeXShop”, didn’t respond with any pane. When I looked at “check for updates”, it told me that 3.6.5 was the latest version. I took the TeXShop logo in the old position in my dock and took it out of the dock. Then I opened the other logo, quit it (at which point the second logo went away) and went back into applications, and clicked directly on the (unique) TeXShop logo in the folder “TeX”. It still claims to be version 3.6.2.
Any enlightenment about what is going on? (BTW I am running El Capitan)
