John, thanks for providing this information. Herb, thanks for noticing Fink and asking
for this specific piece of information.

Now it is completely clear what happened, because the TeX Live install script
explicitly said that your tar file was for the wrong architecture. You report
that it has ppc code, but TeX Live reported correctly that you have an Intel
processor.

Until recently, Macs could run ppc code. But recent versions of the operating
system don’t have that piece of software.
