I should try running tlmgr on one of my Linux boxes
at work; I'd probably find that stuff that takes
seconds in TLU is instant there :/.

The usual Mac OS bottleneck is the filesystem, and
this doesn't surprise me at all. I might mess around
with profiling it anyway.
