[OS X TeX] Metapost engine w/ -tex=latex switch?

MacTex has

mpost --version 
MetaPost 1.902 (TeX Live 2014) (kpathsea version 6.2.0)

which seems to have the -tex=TEXPROGRAM switch. 

mpost --help
This is MetaPost 1.902 (TeX Live 2014) (kpathsea version 6.2.0)

[…]

  -tex=TEXPROGRAM           use TEXPROGRAM for text labels

Does it not do what you need?
