Apparently it’s a difficult error to debug. Most posts blame it on minipages and such but someone (see stack exchange posts) claimed that their problem was a incorrectly closed double quote. Without knowing anything more about your source I would try some naive things first, for example, retyping the equation from scratch, removing the extra {} around the subscripts, replace with a numbered equation…
