They are fine and faint lines which scroll with the text and can be removed by closing the preview window and re-typesetting. Has anyone else seen this?

While using TeXshop on my book today, the session suddenly quit, forcing me to re-login. Usually, everything (including the mouse pointer and clock) just freezes, requiring a reboot. I am hoping it is not a hardware issue (I don't have Applecare). Sorry for the off topic query.

I occasionally see the artifacts you describe with all recent versions of TeXShop going back some years on a very stable (knock on wood) mid-2012 Retina MacBook Pro. As Herb mentioned, this is almost certainly an interaction between PDF Kit and graphics hardware on these machines.
