[OS X TeX] Invalid character in TS source

Occasionally typesetting stops and the console says that I have an invalid character ^^C in the source. I can’t see anything amiss but if I retype few words near the problem spot, everything typesets ok. Apparently I must be inadvertently entering something funny in the source but I have not been able to identify a sequence of key strokes that reproduces this problem. I was wondering if others have an answer.
