Doing things like that professionally and on a commercial basis, I'd say: Sure!  See <http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/lpor.201400005/pdf> and <http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/andp.v526.3-4/issuetoc> for examples; I wrote the classes for both and typeset LPOR until 2012.  We also did a couple of books for Wiley, Springer, and other publishers; the design and programming principles are the same, though.
