[OS X TeX] TeXShop does not cut&past space

Given

	a whole lot of text just to see what is going on

if, both in Mail and in TextEdit, I cut "just" and paste it to the  
immediate left of "what" I get:

	a whole lot of text to see just what is going on

but when I do it in TeXShop 2.43 under 10.5.8 I get:

	a whole lot of text  to see justwhat is going on

namely two spaces after "text" and no space before "what".

What am I missing?
