When I last read the microtype documentation I think it was mentioned that one needs to turn it on, as in:

  \usepackage[protrusion=true,expansion=false]{microtype}
    \usepackage[activate={true,nocompatibility},verbose=true]{microtype}

Has the documentation changed since then?
