Yes, I do have a  ~/Library/texlive/2011/texmf-config directory -- AND a
  ~/Library/texlive/2011/texmf-var directory. And YES, I did at some 
time months ago run 'updmap' or possibly even 'sudo 'updmap' as I 
struggled to try to comprehend how the whole process of integrating new 
font maps worked.

Should I delete _both_ of those local directories before using

   sudo updmap-sys

with TeXLive 2011?
