Is \texorpdfstring what you're after?

\section{Factoring \texorpdfstring{$ax^2+bx+c$}{text equivalent} when \texorpdfstring{$a\ne1$}{text equivalent}}

It doesn't typeset maths, but it does allow you to control the bookmark.
