Howdy,

I wonder if the zsh isn't initializing PATH through the same mechanism that sh, bash or tcsh use! The MacTeX installer (and FixMacTeX2011) place a file called TeX, with contents /usr/texbin, in /etc/paths.d. That file is read, in /etc/profile, by /usr/libexec/path_helper which appends its contents to the PATH.
